| About Producer | Forte de Cego is a wine range made by Quinta de São Sebastião, an historic estate situated close to Lisbon. The region’s rolling hills and refreshing Atlantic breezes make this an ideal climate to grow grapes and the area has been recognised for its wine: the town of Arruda dos Vinhos was established in 1160 by Portugal’s first king, and owes its name, “Wine Route” to its role as a transit point for wines transported by horse-drawn carts to Lisbon. During the Napoleonic invasions, the estate played a role in the Lines of Torres Vedras, a network of fortifications built in 1809–1810 to defend Lisbon against Napoleon’s troops. This Forte de Cego range was inspired by this part of its history and the 152 forts and represented on the label by different shapes and colours. These juicy, fresh wines combine traditional local varieties like Touriga Nacional, better known for its role as the main Port grape, and Fernao Pires, with more familiar international varieties like Syrah. |
